We are just starting out, collecting the desires and opinions of people in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul area who want to play modern, pattern-based, four-player mahjong. This is not about the tile matching game.
What's all this, then?
My name is Chris Schumann. I'm a software developer, I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and over the past year or so I've become obsessed with mahjong:
- I've learned to play several styles: Chinese Classical, Hong Kong Old Style, Mahjong Competition Rules, Zung Jung, Riichi, and more.
- I've joined several online mahjong discussion communities and playing sites.
- I've read everything on Tom Sloper's mahjong site more than once.
- I've written a program to compute the number of ways to make many scoring patterns.
- When money was tight, and I needed a mahjong set right now, I went into my garage and made one from hunks of a neighbor's tree she had given us.
My wife Julia is a great enabler of this new pastime. Together, we have taught over 40 people how to play mahjong, and still, I find it's difficult to round up enough people for a game, especially on short notice.
I thought it would be great if there were a league in the Twin Cities, so there would be regular games we could play in. If you think so too, I'd like to hear from you.
If you want to put in your two cents on what you'd like to see in a mahjong league in the Twin Cities, please fill out the very short form on the right. Include your email address if you want us to let you know what our plans are! Your information is for our use only, and will not be sold to anyone, for any reason. However, if you don't enter your email address, I can't contact you or keep you up to date.
Thank you for taking time to read this page, and to fill out the form.
P.S. I should mention that Julia's a shark, so watch out!
